Photos From Ohio's Amish Country

This corn was shocked late last autumn.  It took the entire family to get it done.  It's a fairly typical sight in Amish country.  The toddlers will trail the hem of a mother's or grandmother's dress, or maybe follow the men and help by carrying a canteen of water.  All of the children share in the effort to shock the corn, as do neighbors and relatives on other farms.  I've sometimes heard them singing hymns as they work.  Or sometimes a grandfather will tell the old stories as the people work closely together to build one stack at a time.  At any rate, if you were to see a family work a field like this?  Well it's one of the most classically Amish discoveries a tourist in Holmes County can make.  It's why autumn is such an excellent time to travel the back roads here.
