My seventh Amish-Country
Mystery is set in part along Salt Creek Township Lane 601, in Holmes County, Ohio. It’s a quiet and peaceful Amish corner of the
world, with a few English (or Yankee) homes mixed in among the farms. At one point on the high ground there, the
view stretches out over three separate counties. The vistas are magnificent and also
plain. The tall barns and rolling
pastures are clearly old-world in nature, and there are few modern sights like
phone lines, electric poles or TV antennas to scar the display.
I like to visit this short stretch of 601 where it crests on
the high ridge, and I like to watch for the glory of the autumn colors there,
because it rarely disappoints. This
picture is one I took on an October day not long ago, with an Amish homestead
in the foreground. I hope you like it as
much as I do. It serves as the cover
illustration for the hardcover edition of Harmless as Doves.
